One gotcha specific to your VS Code workflow: VS Code often inherits a different environment than your interactive shell (especially if launched from Dock/Spotlight rather than code . from a terminal), so a key can be set in one and not the other — verify with /status from inside the VS Code integrated terminal specifically.
